This is a great sound card for the price. You can hear a big difference from current onboard solutions. Great audio center software that allows for plenty of customization. If you want a full in depth review I suggest doing a quick Google search for “Asus Xonar D1 Review”

I just did a massive overhaul of my computer and I decided to throw this in.

My computer runs on linux Ubuntu 9.04. As many know their arent many cards that run nativcely on linux. Happily however this card is one that runs without any issues. Just plug it in and go.

Re performance I was sceptical at first, but it is really a very good card. I have a 5.1 surround sound system, so even with my onboard I had good sound. This card takes it to another level though. Definite improvement in sound quality. Especially in the highs and mids. The base is also very crisp and clear. All around I am very happy with the results.

It also adds another dimension to videos, and watching shows on the internet.

Youtube videos are transformed into a theatre like experience. Watching other videos like 24 on [...] , makes you feel right in the thick of the action. The sound of bullets rippling through the walls and base crashing with explosions is beyond this world.

Installation was very simple. The card needs Alsa drivers Version 1.0.18. This comes with the ubuntu 9.04 kernel. So if you plug it in and it doesnt work, simply upgrade your PC.

The only hick up was disabling the onboard card which was very simple from BIOS.

Cons, it does have some hissing occasionally. Not sure whats the cause of that
